SEA SPRAY CATAMARAN-CLASS RULES
Approved by U.S. and Canadian Sea Spray Fleets

GENERAL
The Sea Spray 15 is a one design catamaran; the tolerances are intended to allow for manufacturing variances only.

HULLS AND WEIGHT
All hulls must be manufactured by a licensed Sea Spray builder. No alteration to the shape of the hulls is permitted. Fairing and polishing are permitted. Minimum weight is 180 lb. 'all up'. 'All up' is defined are a fully rigged ready to sail and in compliance with United States Coast Guard (or Canadian) regulations; life jacket and paddle may be included. Structural alterations made after manufacture to add or subtract weight are prohibited. Normal repairs, provided they do not significantly alter hull weight are permitted.

BEAM
The maximum beam shall not exceed 6'6" measured gunnel to gunnel.

BOW TUBE
The bow tube shall be a straight continuous tube not to exceed 2" O.D. and have a wall thickness of not less than .05".

MAST MAIN BEAM
The mast main beam shall be a straight continuous 4' O.D. aluminum tube of not less than 0.05" nominal wall thickness. The mast main beam may be reinforced in its center, directly under the mast step be a fir or spruce stringer not to exceed 24" x 4" x 1".

REAR MAIN BEAM
The rear main beam shall be a straight continuous 4" O.D. tube of not less than .05" nominal wall thickness.

TRAMPOLINE
The trampoline deck shall substantially cover the area between the inner shear lines, the mast main beam and the rear main beam. The trampoline shall lace aft to tighten leaving a maximum space of not more than 240 square inches. There shall be a trampoline deck support of 2" O.D. tube between the mast main beam and the rear main beam, on the center line of the boat. Net trampolines are specifically prohibited.

DAGGER BOARDS
There shall be a dagger board fitted in each hull. The thickness of each board shall be 3/4" plus or minus 1/4". Size and shape shall conform to manufactures specifications. Shape and size is optional.

RUDDERS
There shall be a rudders fitted to each hull on the transom and on the center line of the hull. The thickness of the rudder blade shall be 3/4"" plus or minus 1/4". Size and shape conform to manufactures specifications. Line drawings shall be obtainable from the manufacturer.

MAST STEP
The mast step shall not extend more than 4" above the mast main beam.

MAST
The mast shall be a uniform untapered section with a maximum height of 20'4". The mast cross section shall conform to manufacture specifications. The mast hounds and shroud attachment points shall be 13" plus or minus 2" from the lower extremity of the tube and within 1-1/2" from the face of the tube. The mast shall be free to rotate. Mast stiffening devices, spreaders, diamond or jack stays are expressly prohibited. The Sleeve mast may have a wood stringer reinforcement at the boom and hound attachment points.

BOOM
The boom tube shall be a straight continuous 2" O.D. tube of not less than .05" nominal wall thickness. Internal stiffeners are permitted.

STANDING RIGGING
There shall be two shrouds, one forestay and a bridle. All standing rigging shall be a minimum of 3/32" diameter stainless steel 1x19 wire. The shroud and forestay attachment points are dictated under MAST, section #11. The length of the forestay shall be 13'4", plus or minus 6". The shrouds shall attach to fitting provided in the hulls.

RUNNING RIGGING
All running rigging shall be at the owner's option. A mainsheet traveler is permitted that it runs substantially straight across the rear main beam.

SAILS
Sails supplied at the time of delivery are legal and shall remain legal unless they are altered at which time they are subject to measurement.

FORESAIL
The foresail shall be constructed to fall within a triangle, the luff of which shall not exceed 12'6" in length. A roach on the foot of the jib may extend beyond the triangle to a minimum of 2" at the center point of the foot. The center point of the foot's roach shall be measured from a straight line taken from the lowest point of the luff to the lowest point of the leech.

A positive or negative roach of 2" at the center point of the leech is permissible. The center point of the leech roach shall be measured from a straight line taken from the lowest point of the clew to the highest point of the head. There may be two battens in the leech, the upper not exceeding 9" and the lower not exceeding 12" in length. The tack, clew and head of the jib must fall within the triangle.

MAINSAIL
The mainsail shall be loosefooted and be attached to the mast either by a sock slid over the mast from the head or by means of a luff groove extruded into or attached onto the mast.

The mainsail is based upon a triangle. The length of the luff shall not exceed 18'7". The measurement shall be taken from the lowest point of the luff to the highest point of the head. The foot measures from the forward center line of the mast to the intersection of the foot and the leech at the clew and shall not exceed 9'4". The maximum roach on the foot shall not exceed 4".The maximum foot roach shall be measured from a straight line taken from the lowest allowable point of the luff to the lowest allowable point of the leech.

The leech measurement shall not be greater than 19'8". The measurement shall be taken between the lowest point of the clew (at the intersection of the foot and leech)and the top aft corner of either the sock or the headboard. The top horizontal dimension of the headboard allowed on the halyard sail, shall not exceed 4", which the forward edge of the headboard shall be attached within 1/4" of the aft edge of the bolt rope. For a sock sail the top aft corner of the sock is 9" from the forward center line of the mast level with the top most part of the sail.

The cross measurement of the sail shall not exceed the following:

HALYARDSLEEVE
At quarter height86.5"91"
At half height64.5"69"
At three-quarters height40.5"45"
At the Top Batten height26.5"31"

Halyard cross measurement to include the bolt rope across to the leech. Sleeve cross measurement to include the sleeve across to the leech.

Cross measurement shall be measured as follows:
The midpoint of the luff shall be determined by folding the sail upon itself with the top forward corner of the headboard (or sleeve) even with the lowest edge of the bolt rope (or sleeve) at the tack. The midpoint of the leech shall be determined in the same manner, with the headboard folded down to the lowest point of the sail at the clew. The half height cross measurement shall be the distance between the halfway points of the luff and the leech with the sail laid on the floor, with just enough tension to remove the wrinkles. Quarter and three quarter height cross measurements shall be determined in the same manner by folding it a second time.

The number of battens in the mainsail shall not exceed five. Each batten shall not exceed 27" in length, except for the top batten on a sleeve sail which shall not exceed 28 1/2". The distance to the bottom of the upper batten pocket at the leach from the top aft comer of either the sleeve or the headboard shall not be less than 32". The bottom batten pocket shall not be less than 39" from the lower edge of the clew cringle. The width of the battens shall not exceed 3".

A Cunningham hole is permissible.

Where a sleeve sail is used the width of the sleeve material may not be greater than 18" The sleeve may be shaped to provide good sail contours.

****5'9"**** - Note this dimension currently allowed by the Canadian Sea Spray Rules does not allow a fair line to be laid out from the bottom of the sail to the top of the sail.

To fix this problem the measurement needs to be increased by 2". This should be done at a later date to allow discussion with the Canadian Fleet.

OTHER SAILS
No other sails may be fitted.

MEASUREMENT OF SAILS
Any alterations of sails subject them to re-measurement. All measurements shall be done by a manufacture approved class measurer.

MISCELLANEOUS
No hiking aid may be used in Sea Spray One Design Competition other than toe straps. A trapeze gear may be fitted for other competition.

Hydrofoils, ballast, spray deflectors, outrigger or any other device designed to alter the basic sailing characteristics of the boat are expressly prohibited.

OLDER BOATS
All boats built since January 1, 1973 shall comply with the current rules. Boats built prior to January 1, 1973 shall comply with the rules which were in effect at the time of manufacture.
